Pleading with the Holy Spirit for Joy is a Daily Work

Quote from John Piper’s book, When I Don’t Desire God: How to Fight for Joy.

Available for free here in pdf format at Desiring God ministries.

The fight for joy is the fight to see and believe Christ as more to be desired than the promises of sin. This faith and sight come by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. We look to the Word, we ponder, and we plead with God that the eyes of our hearts would be opened to see the superior glory and joy. This pleading is so important we will devote the whole of Chapter Nine to it. But suffice it to say for now that we are utterly dependent on the Spirit to make the promises of God more desirable to us than the promises of sin. And for that vital eye-opening, heart-changing work we pray every day. (p. 100)
